The short version: we keep your email address and nothing about your child. We never sell your details, and ad measurement only runs if you say yes.

The short version

Your email, not your child's detailsJoining needs one email address. We never ask for a child's name, birthday or photo.
No selling, everWe don't sell your details or swap lists with anyone.
Ads only with your OKMeta's pixel only runs if you say yes. Say no, or send a Global Privacy Control signal, and it never loads.

This page covers scoutcam.ai: the Scout pages, the waitlist, our emails, the tester questions, the optional reservation and the Field notes. The Scout camera and the Scout app will have their own privacy notice, written for families, before anyone uses them.

Who we are

Scout is a nature camera for curious kids aged 9 to 13, made by NatureScope LLC, a company registered in Wyoming, USA. When this page says "we", "us" or "Scout", it means NatureScope LLC, which is responsible for your details (the "controller"). For anything about your data, email hello@scoutcam.ai and a real person will answer.

Our postal address:
NatureScope LLC, 30 N Gould Street, Ste R, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA

What we keep when you join the waitlist

  • Your email address. It's how we tell you about Scout and the Kickstarter.
  • When you joined. Founding Family places go in the order families join, so the time is your place in the queue.
  • Which country's page you joined on (UK or US), so you see the right prices, places and spelling.
  • How you found us, if you arrived from a link: the tags on that link (for example which ad or which email it was), recorded the first and the last time you visited. That's how we know which ads and posts actually bring families, counted by us rather than guessed by an ad platform.
  • Whether you said yes to ad measurement on the page.

That's all. There's no password, no profile and no tracking across other websites.

Nothing about your child

The site is for grown-ups. We don't ask for a child's name, birthday, school, photo or location, and we don't want them. If you answer our optional tester questions, the most we ask about your children is their age bands (for example 9 to 10), and even that is optional.

Children shouldn't join the waitlist themselves. If you think a child has, email us and we'll delete it straight away.

Visiting the page

We count visits to make the page better: which version of the page someone saw, which link brought them, how far down the page they got and for how long, which parts they tried (like the demos), whether they tapped the email box, whether they were on a phone or a computer, and whether they joined. We never record what anyone types unless they press Join. To do that the site sets a few of its own cookies. They never leave Scout and aren't used anywhere else.

On Field notes (the blog) we count which post was read, which site or link brought the reader (the site's name only, never the page they came from), how long the post was on screen and how far down they read, and whether they were on a phone. It uses the same visitor number, so we can tell whether reading a post led someone to join.

Cookie What it's for How long
sid A random visitor number, so one visit isn't counted twice 180 days
sv Which version of the page you saw 180 days
rg Whether you're on the UK or US page 180 days
sr Marks our own team's visits, so they aren't counted 180 days

Your country. To show the UK or US page, we look up which country your internet connection is in, using a database kept on our own server (IP Geolocation by DB-IP, CC BY 4.0). We don't keep your IP address or the country.

Stopping spam. To stop bots flooding the waitlist, the site remembers how many sign-ups came from one internet address in the last hour. That number is held in memory only, never saved, and gone within the hour.

Fonts. The pages use Google Fonts, so your browser asks Google's servers for the lettering. Google sees your IP address when it does.

Ad measurement with Meta (only with your OK)

We advertise on Facebook and Instagram. If you say yes on the cookie banner:

  • Meta's pixel runs on the page and sets its own cookies (_fbp, and _fbc if you came from an ad). It tells Meta you visited, and later which of our ads brought you.
  • When you join, we tell Meta that a sign-up happened, together with your email address scrambled (hashed), so Meta can match it to the ad you saw without us handing over the address itself. We send your browser details and IP address with it, as Meta requires.
  • If you reserve a place, we tell Meta about that the same way.

If you say no, or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, none of this happens: the pixel never loads and nothing is sent to Meta. You can change your mind at any time here:

Checking your choice…

Turning it off stops the pixel from the next page you open. Your choice is saved in this browser only, so set it again on another phone or computer.

Our emails

We send the emails you signed up for: news about Scout, the Kickstarter and, now and then, a Field note. Every email has a link to switch to just the big news or to unsubscribe, and one click is enough.

Links in our emails go through scoutcam.ai first, so we can count which links get clicked and learn what's useful. We don't track whether you open an email. If an email bounces or is marked as spam, we stop sending to that address.

Tester questions (optional)

After joining you can answer a few questions to be considered as a tester family. If you do, we keep your answers with your email address to choose families: your first name, your region, your children's age bands, how often and where you like to explore, which phone and which device your children would use with Scout, whether you'd like to test, and anything you choose to tell us. Never a child's name.

Reserving a place (when offered)

Sometimes we offer the chance to hold a Founding Family place with a small refundable deposit. The payment is taken by Stripe: your card details go to Stripe, never to us. We keep that you reserved, the amount, the date and Stripe's payment reference, plus the browser details needed to tell Meta about it if you said yes to ad measurement. We refund the deposit in full whenever you ask.

Who helps us run this

We use a few trusted services, and only for the jobs below:

  • Modal runs our website and stores the waitlist, on servers in the United States.
  • Resend sends our emails.
  • Stripe takes reservation payments, if you reserve.
  • Meta receives ad measurement, only if you said yes.
  • Google Fonts serves the lettering on the page.

Some of these are in the United States. Where your details leave the UK, they're protected by the safeguards UK law requires, such as the UK's data bridge with the US or standard contract clauses.

Why we're allowed to use your details

In UK data protection terms: we email you because you asked us to (consent), and you can withdraw that by unsubscribing. Ad measurement runs only with your consent. Counting visits, stopping spam and keeping the queue order are in our legitimate interests in running a fair waitlist and a page that works. Reservation payments are handled to do what you asked us to.

How long we keep things

We keep your waitlist details until Scout has launched and the Kickstarter rewards have been sent, or until you ask us to delete them, whichever comes first. Visit counts (a random visitor number, never a name) are deleted once the Kickstarter campaign is over. Payment records are kept for as long as the law requires for accounts.

Your rights

You can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or stop using it. Email hello@scoutcam.ai from the address you signed up with and we'll do it, normally within a few days and always within a month. It's free.

If you're not happy with how we've handled your details, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If we change how we use your details, we'll update this page and the date at the top. If it's a big change, we'll email you first.
