Why Scout exists
Think back. The den you built. The tree you knew every branch of. The long way home, on purpose. Nobody had to teach you to be curious. It was just right there.
Our kids are every bit as curious, but everything around them points inward, onto screens. The woods, the creek, the vacant lot at the end of the street: more and more of it goes unexplored.
We don’t think the answer is to take technology away. For the first time, it can do the opposite.
For parents and carers
Only nature photos are sent to be named. Anything with a face stays on your family’s own devices.

Scout is launching on Kickstarter in spring 2027. Waitlist families hear the moment it goes live, before anyone else. The earliest families become Scout's founding families: they help shape what goes into Scout, and get Scout at its landed cost, with no margin for us: exactly what it costs us, landed in the US. The more families on board, the bigger the run and the lower that cost. After you join, you can hold a founding place with a small refundable deposit. Scouts ship to backers once the first production run is made.
Backing a Kickstarter isn’t the same as buying from a shop. You pledge, your card is charged only if we reach our funding goal, and Scouts ship to backers once they’re made. We’ll share our timeline and the risks openly on the campaign page.
A handful of families will get an early Scout before launch, take it on real walks and tell us honestly what to make better. Test Scouts are pre-production, so they come back to us when the test ends (we send a prepaid label), and on launch day each tester family gets its own brand-new Scout 100% off. You pay $20 for shipping, refunded in full once you’ve sent us your feedback and the test Scout is on its way back. Families who hold a founding place can apply, and we choose from the best applications.
Scout has its own AI chip with a nature-trained vision model built in, so it names what they’ve found right there on the walk. It follows strict rules: it only gives a name when it’s confident, and otherwise says what it can, like “a kind of beetle”. Back home, a bigger nature-only model on our own secure servers double-checks before the find becomes a card.
Home Wi-Fi and the free Scout app on a phone, tablet or computer. That’s where the reveal happens and the collection lives.
The camera, the guides, the cards, the badges and the app all work without one. The guides answer a set of ready-made questions on every card for free. An optional Scout Pro plan adds three extras: ask the guides anything, as often as you like; finds named live on the camera while you explore, through your phone when you're out together; and each find's facts read out on the camera itself.
We use it only to tell you about Scout: a short welcome series about what we’re building, occasional trail notes, and the big news when orders open. Every email lets you switch to just the big news or unsubscribe, and we never share your address.
